| Neil recalls qualifying as a solicitor, 'centuries ago' in November 1970. He had worked extensively in private practice, mainly in the non-contentious fields of conveyancing and probate. His later work however took him into licensing law and, to a limited degree, incidental `green form' case advice. He has worked in partnership, but eventually became a sole practitioner. A friend's chance question in 1994 about whether he could `advise some asylum seekers' started a chain of events, which eventually lead to a complete career redirection, and to employment with the IAS in 1995, where he remains to this day. Having started as an Immigration Counsellor with IAS, Neil took over responsibility for the IAS Solicitors Unit in July 1998. The Unit deals with M's public funding Licensed Work, being responsible for conduct of cases involving Judicial and Statutory Review, and appeals to the Court of Appeal. Neil was responsible for training and guiding IAS in the introduction of the 'green farm' scheme, prior to introduction of the LSC franchising scheme in 2000. At IAS, he is engaged with senior management tasks, and is also one of the IAS `in-house' tutors, dealing with induction training of new counsellors. |
