| Commission thinks again on specialist support |
Date: 24 Mar 2006

The Legal Services Commission has decided to review its decision to terminate the specialist support contracts and the services will therefore continue, under the same terms, after 19 July. The Commission said it regretted the disruption its decision to terminate the specialist support services had caused the providers. It has asked the claimants in the judicial review proceedings to withdraw their challenge to the termination decision and has offered to pay their reasonable costs to date. Once the final five-year strategy for the CLS has been published, the Commission says it intends to formulate proposals about the future of the specialist support initiative, upon which providers will be consulted. While it says it cannot rule out the possibility that the process will herald further changes to, or termination of, the specialist support initiative, it "intends to consider all options, on their merits, with an open mind". Richard Miller, director of LAPG, said the group was delighted that the LSC had agreed to think again. "This is not just about the specialist support service, but about the whole way the LSC makes decisions," he said. "Consultation is not a hurdle to be avoided if possible, or overcome with the least impact possible on proposals. It is a sensible and important way of engaging with the profession so as to find the best available solutions to the challenges we all face." |
