Pop up Briefing & Social (Manchester)

This is a new concept for LAPG. To reach members across all of the UK we will be rolling a series of Pop Up 2 hour briefings to update members on the key issues of the moment.

Our inaugural briefing will be:

 ‘Post LASPO – Civil Developments’

Since 1st April 2013 we’ve had dozens of emails from practitioners asking for guidance and help with LASPO and LAA related issues. We’ve decided to offer some catch-up training on the post LASPO civil legal aid scheme and the LAA’s approach.   We have some ideas about content but are very flexible so please email us your post LASPO challenges and we will aim to cover them, anonymously of course, in the sessions.

As your representative, we are in constant contact with the Law Society and LAA and are directly involved in key meetings and briefings. We will share information gathered in those meetings at these pop-up sessions.

The training will be delivered by our Director, Carol Storer, and by Matthew Howgate, LAPG committee member and legal aid consultant.

We also intend to host a social after the briefing to give an opportunity for an informal discussion with Carol and Mathew as well as an opportunity to exchange and share local information.

Welcome and overview – post LASPO what has been going on?

Feedback from LAPG members and matters arising from meetings with LAA and MoJ.

Amongst the issues we will cover (but we want your input to decide which are the ones you want included):-

  • What is going wrong for clients trying to prove domestic violence for private law cases? Why are so many clients failing to get legal aid?
  • Financial eligibility – still a headache? And when is the Universal Credit consultation coming out?
  • LAA processing issues – why are the LAA rejecting so many applications and claims and what can you do about it?
  • What’s happening with electronic working?
  • LASPO scope issues generally – discussing experiences of navigating the new rules.
  • Matter starts, or the lack of them, and the LAA’s approach to permanent presence. Verification continues apace.
  • Any update on commissioning timetable for low volume contracts e.g. mental health and community care.
  • What’s going on with exceptional case funding? Are there really only six successful applications? And four of those are for inquests?
  • What on earth is going on with judicial review?
  • The briefings will accrue 1.5 CPD hours. Cost £25 + VAT for members £40 + VAT for non-members

Manchester  Thursday 15 May 2014 Briefing:  4:00pm-6.00pm  Social:  6:00Pm-6:30pm Book Here
